Japanese saxophonist Genji Sawai has been a supporting member of many major artists since 1973, and co-produced the 1984 masterpiece "Sowaka" with Bill Laswell's Material. This album was released in 1982, features a number of musicians who supported the Japanese jazz fusion scene at the time, including Toshiyuki Otoku, Hitoshi Okano, Yoshihiro Naruse, Tatsuji Yokoyama, Yutaka Uehara, Hiroshi Irie and Mitsuo Nagai. Particularly noteworthy is the bold introduction of synthesizers by Toshiyuki Otoku, Hiroshi Irie and Junko Miyagi, which adds a nice colourful touch to the harmonies.
