This is a 1978 leader album by George Lewis, a trombonist who played a central role in the Chicago jazz scene from the mid-1970s and was a member of the AACM, organized around Richard Abrams. The album features four tracks, each with a different structure, and it boasts a lineup of strong AACM-connected musicians, including Douglas Ewart (multi-reed), Leroy Jenkins (violin), Anthony Davis (piano), Muhal Richard Abrams (piano), Roscoe Mitchell (saxophone), and more. The album is quite remarkable, with experimental free jazz that unfolds throughout, featuring trippy electronic sounds and percussions reminiscent of metallic objects. The standout track, "B1," features lead instruments moving like animal calls. It's an intense and mind-bending work, akin to the experimental free jazz of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Anthony Braxton's lineage. What makes it truly exceptional is the profoundly organic and naturalistic sense it conveys. Highly recommended.
