An album released in 1976 by American saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett, who co-founded the Black Artist’s Group, an artistic collective in the late 1960s that supported multidisciplinary artists. After moving to New York in 1969, he played in groups led by Charles Mingus and Sam Rivers. In the mid-1970s, he co-founded the World Saxophone Quartet with his ally Oliver Lake, exploring avant-garde jazz. This album features a quintet with Jumma Santos (balafon), Junie Booth (bass), Olu Dara (trumpet), and Phillip Wilson (drums), recorded live at New York's Ladie’s Fort in June of that year. It’s an excellent work where thrilling sessions of interplay are layered with a primitive Afro-feeling, reminiscent of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Highly recommended.
