Harold Land Quintet
The Fox

An album released in 1960 by American tenor saxophonist Harold Land, who rose to prominence through his work with the Max Roach and Clifford Brown group, and was active from the mid-1950s onward alongside artists like Bobby Hutcherson, Blue Mitchell, and Red Mitchell. The quintet features Dupree Bolton (trumpet), Elmo Hope (piano), Herbie Lewis (bass), and Frank Butler (drums). The album includes three compositions each by Land and Hope. Land’s phrasing and interplay, which seem to bridge hard bop and post-bop, are particularly striking. One can subtly sense his inclination toward the modal and harmonically rich style influenced by John Coltrane’s modalism and techniques.
