Released in 1980, this album by American vocalist Helen Merrill, who had been active at the forefront of the jazz scene since the 1950s, was self-produced together with Torrie Zito. Featuring an outstanding lineup of musicians including George Mraz on bass, Grady Tate on drums, Dom Um Romao on drums and percussion, Joe Beck on guitar, and Sal Nistico on saxophone, the album presents a beautifully refined set of crossover arrangements. Centered around Brazilian classics such as Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave” and Edu Lobo’s “Casa Forte,” alongside gems including Michael Franks’ signature hit “Antonio’s Song,” Merrill delivers superb vocal performances supported by rich, elegant musicianship throughout. From uplifting numbers to deeply mellow ballads, the entire album is filled with a melting, sophisticated atmosphere. Highly recommended.
