Released in 1979, this is a superb album by Herb Pilhofer, a Minneapolis Twin Cities-based studio musician and engineer who owned Sound 80, the famed recording studio behind countless sessions including works by Lipps Inc. and Manfredo Fest. Featuring synthesizers and a string orchestra, the album presents a highly conceptual strain of crossover jazz that unfolds in a progressive manner, embracing everything from modern jazz and funk to electronics. It was recorded using 3M’s then state-of-the-art digital recording system, offering a wider dynamic range and frequency response than conventional analog setups, and the sound quality has that same striking presence and glossy sheen reminiscent of Toshiba’s Pro-Use series from 1970s Japan, with beautifully sharp waveform definition. The material is remarkably varied throughout, but every track delivers. Highly recommended.
