American saxophonist Jackie McLean emerged as a prominent figure in his teens, performing with Kenny Drew and Sonny Rollins and participating in a Miles Davis recording in 1951. In 1955, he released his debut leader album, "The New Tradition," from Ad Lib, and subsequently left many masterpieces on labels like Prestige and Blue Note. The album, released in 1956 on Prestige's New Jazz, features Donald Byrd (trumpet), Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Mal Waldron (piano), Doug Watkins (bass), and Arthur Taylor (drums). It includes a cover of a popular song originally made for Les Brown's band and hit by Doris Day, starting with A1, and is an excellent early hard bop work that progresses with a consistently relaxed atmosphere. This US edition was released in 1983 by Original Jazz Classics.
