John Surman, a British saxophonist, released his first solo album on ECM in 1979. The album is a self-performed, multi-recorded work playing all the instruments himself. The album is full of deep meditative jazz with wet, fine grained synthesizer arpeggios, minimal bass clarinet phrases and sad soprano and baritone saxophone melodies. As with his 1985 classic “Withholding Pattern”, Surman's use of synthesizers is at its deepest and most spiritual.
