Founded in 1976 by Louis Bricard, the French label Auvidis released a wide range of classical, world music, and children’s records. This is the second volume in its compilation series dedicated to performances of traditional Japanese music. Side A features “Koku Reibo,” one of the honkyoku pieces in the traditional shakuhachi repertoire, said to have been arranged by Kurosawa Kinko after learning it in Kyushu during his travels across Japan in the Edo period. It is performed here by Judō Notomi of the Araki school of the Kinko-ryu lineage. Side B presents “Mukaitake Reibo,” another representative shakuhachi honkyoku piece once performed by the komusō monks of the Edo period, played by the Living National Treasure shakuhachi master Goro Yamaguchi. Both pieces run well over 20 minutes, allowing listeners to fully immerse themselves in the deep, meditative world of komusō shakuhachi.
A: Koku-Reibo
B: Mukaiji-Reibo
