Released in 1984, this album is by Kazumi Watanabe, one of Japan’s leading guitarists, who has remained highly active from the 1970s to the present day. Featuring an impressive lineup of guests including Ichiko Hashimoto, Greg Lee, Ken Watanabe, Shuichi Murakami, Kiyohiko Semba, Mitsuru Sawamura, and Akira Sakata, the album presents an experimental approach that moves far beyond the usual jazz-fusion framework, responding to rock, new wave, and electronic music in a way that also recalls the direction Akira Sakata was exploring around the same period with Wa-Ha-Ha and related projects. A3 is especially wonderful, with minimal marimba melodies and Ichiko Hashimoto’s voice drifting softly through the piece.
