American multi-instrumentalist Ken McIntyre, known for his work with groups like The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Bill Dixon 7-Tette, and Beaver Harris' 360 Degree Music Experience, as well as for his own group, has been producing outstanding albums since the early 1960s. In 1961, he released a leader album on Prestige's New Jazz label, featuring guest artist Eric Dolphy. Recorded in a New York studio in 1960 with a quintet including Walter Bishop Jr. (piano), Sam Jones (bass), and Arthur Taylor (drums), the album includes mostly McIntyre's original scores, with the exception of Gershwin's standard numbers. While the album showcases relatively orthodox hard bop, McIntyre's and Dolphy's phrasing adds a distinctive flair that captivates the listener. This reissue from 1986, released on Original Jazz Classics, preserves the essence of the original release.
