This 1980 album is by L. Subramaniam, an Indian violinist and composer from Chennai, South India, who is well-versed in traditional Carnatic music and Western music, and has collaborated extensively with jazz artists like Stu Goldberg, Larry Coryell, and Stephane Grappelli. Featuring Zakir Hussain (tabla, etc.), the album showcases a variety of styles mixed with ethnic sensibilities, ranging from modern to crossover jazz. Highlights include track A1, a jazz-rock piece with tight, bouncy drum rhythms and psychedelic violin and guitar solos, and track B2, an odd-meter Indian jazz-funk piece that starts with a tambura drone and violin raga before the tabla lays down a funky beat. The tabla sound intriguingly resembles electronic tones, adding to the unique atmosphere of this great crossover jazz work.
