Lee Morgan, a precocious American trumpeter who participated in numerous legendary sessions with groups like Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, and Art Blakey, and who released the iconic album "The Sidewinder" in 1963, among other masterpieces in his own right, passed away at the young age of 32 in 1972. In 1966, he released a leader album featuring a sextet with top-notch musicians, including Wayne Shorter (ts), Grant Green (g), Herbie Hancock (p), Reginald Workman (b), and Billy Higgins (ds). The title track, A1, possesses a level of sophistication that is hard to believe was recorded in 1966 and foreshadows the crossover jazz that Shorter and Hancock would later explore. It is truly a gem known as "Search for the New Land." This album is a high-quality US reissue that adopted the cutting-edge press technology DMM (Direct Metal Mastering), developed jointly by Neuman and Teldec.
