Soul Note (Italy) 1985

Led by American jazz pianist Michael Cochrane—known for his numerous collaborations with Hannibal Marvin Peterson and for having shared the stage with Pharoah Sanders—this quintet album was released in 1985 on Italy’s Soul Note label. The lineup features Tom Harrell (tp, fh), Bob Malach (ts, fl), Dennis Irwin (b), and James Madison (ds). Rooted primarily in straight-ahead modern jazz and hard bop, the album also ventures into urban-tinged slow jazz and elegant contemporary jazz territory. Nothing flashy or overstated here—just mature, tasteful playing imbued with a subtle sensuality, making for an effortlessly enjoyable listen. Highly recommended tracks include A3 and B3, which incorporate Brazilian rhythms, as well as B4, with its deeply understated, smoky groove. A solid, refined session throughout.

B3: Proof of the Pudding
B4: Waltz No. 1
