This live recording album captures a 1984 performance at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Hall, featuring works by the great Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu—one of Japan’s most internationally acclaimed musical figures—conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki and performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra. The album includes Dorian Horizon, an early work that evokes gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) through Western instruments; November Steps, a masterpiece incorporating improvisations by biwa player Kinshi Tsuruta and shakuhachi player Katsuya Yokoyama; A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden, notable for its depiction of a flock of birds through the oboe; and Dreamtime, inspired by Aboriginal mythology from Australia. Also featured is Orion and Pleiades, performed for the first time in Japan during this concert. The album offers a stunning orchestral interpretation of Takemitsu’s body of work, which can be seen as a profound hymn to nature.
