A 12-inch single released in 1979 by Nina Simone, one of the definitive Black American jazz singers, whose expressive range extends from standards to primitive Afro-rooted material. Featuring two tracks taken from her historic 1978 CTI masterpiece Baltimore, this single pairs “The Family,” written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins—also known for providing songs to artists such as Dusty Springfield and Bobbie Gentry—with Randy Newman’s “Baltimore,” a wonderfully laid-back cut driven by a reggae rhythm and mellow groove. Both sides are absolutely superb. Unusually for a US 12-inch pressing, it is cut at 45 RPM.
A: The Family
B: Baltimore
