Nmperign, an American free improvisation unit consisting of Bhob Rainey and Greg Kelley, who have also released a collaboration with Gunter Muller, released an album in 2002 with German improvisers Axel Dorner and Burkhard Beins. It’s a simple composition of percussion, soprano saxophone, and trumpet, but each instrument plays in a way that goes beyond the preconceived notions. The silence and groaning twists and turns the space by simply floating in the time axis. The B-side is a performance by Nmperign alone, which twists time and space even further. The meaningful artwork, with only a chair lacking lines, is also excellent.
