Released in 1979 as part of Nonesuch’s acclaimed Explorer Series, this album features court gamelan music from the Indonesian island of Java. The series, issued by the renowned American label known for its wide-ranging catalogue spanning field recordings of traditional music to contemporary and experimental works, remains highly regarded for its exceptional ethnographic recordings. The recordings were made by Robert E. Brown, who was responsible for numerous field-recording projects in the Explorer Series, at the Kraton Palace in the ancient city of Yogyakarta, a place that continues to serve as one of the principal centers of Javanese culture. Moving at a leisurely pace, the music creates a deeply soothing and mystical resonance as the tones of bronze gongs, metallophones, xylophones, and other instruments gently overlap and intertwine. An outstanding recording that beautifully captures the refined atmosphere of Javanese court music. B1 is an extended performance lasting over 25 minutes.
