The second album by the first incarnation of the Pat Metheny Group, led by Pat Metheny, unquestionably one of the world’s greatest guitarists, released on ECM in 1979. The lineup features Lyle Mays (keys), Mark Egan (b), and Dan Gottlieb (ds). Recorded that same year at Long View Farm in Missouri, often described as one of the most beautiful recording environments in the world, the album was produced by Metheny himself, with Manfred Eicher serving as executive producer. At this stage, Metheny had not yet introduced the guitar synthesizer that would later become one of his signature sounds, instead playing six- and twelve-string guitars, while Lyle Mays provides much of the electronic coloration through Oberheim synthesizer and autoharp. Throughout the album, an exquisitely detailed and luminous sound world unfolds, almost like brilliant sunlight sparkling as it pours down from above. A beautiful example of the distinctive Pat Metheny Group sound already fully taking shape.
