A masterpiece and the debut album by the Pat Metheny Group, released on ECM in 1978 after Metheny left Gary Burton’s group and formed his own band with Lyle Mays, Mark Egan, and Dan Gottlieb. Every track was composed by Metheny, either alone or in collaboration with Mays. Metheny’s soaring, high-register guitar, Mays’ bright and luminous piano, Egan’s bass, and Gottlieb’s drums blend together in perfect balance, creating an extraordinary and unmistakably beautiful sound world. Highlights include A1 and A2, both of which were later performed on the sublime live album Travels, which also featured the late Nana Vasconcelos. Lose yourself in these almost impossibly beautiful, transcendent sounds.
