Under the direction of Benny Golson, Rhythmstick is a special project that brings together such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Art Farmer, Phil Woods, Airto, Flora Purim, Anthony Jackson, Marvin Smith, Bernard Purdie, John McGriff, and more, and the only album released on CTI in 1990. It was recorded at the studio owned by Rudy Van Gelder, a legendary engineer who has recorded for Blue Note, Prestige, and CTI. A wonderful gem of a back-to-roots jazz orchestra that connects Latin, Brazilian, and African music, from original compositions by the participating members to songs by Gilberto Gil, Moacir Santos, and Salif Keita. This is a rare analog release from the CD era.
