This is the 1976 leader album by Roscoe Mitchell, an American saxophonist and one of the founding members of the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians). Mitchell has been a central figure in the Art Ensemble of Chicago, contributing to numerous acclaimed works. The album features a quartet with AACM members Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, George Lewis on trombone, and Spencer Barfield on guitar.
The album is a captivating free improvisation piece that creates a dynamic interplay of tension and spatiality through its varying dynamics and short-long structures. However, the standout is the opening track, A1, where all instruments refrain from a single note in an extremely minimalistic manner, shaping a deep sonic space. This track later connects to significant works recorded by George Lewis with Douglas Ewart and others, leading to releases on Italy's Black Saint label.
Please note that there are a few instances of vinyl noise, likely originating from the master source or the cutting process.
