This album was released in 1973 that is including two 20th century's Japanese contemporary music by Miyashita Shuretsu and Makoto Moroi. Miyashita Shuretsu, a Japanese koto player who contributed to the development of Japanese traditional music and was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1975 and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Fourth Class in 1982, as well as for the development and popularization of the 30-string koto. Chikurin Seisha" was commissioned by NHK in 1972, and features an eclectic mix of Eastern and Western music, including Shin and Tazuko Miyashita on the 30-string koto, Katsuya Yokoyama on the shakuhachi, Keiko Abe on marimba and vibraphone, dragon flute, veena, tambour, tabla, conch, double bass and chorus. The three-part suite, which expresses the life of Buddha while being heavily influenced by Indian classical music, is performed. The piece, "Ui-Tenpen," is a work by Makoto Moroi, one of Japan's leading postwar composers, and features a trio of Japanese instruments: koto/30 strings by Shin Miyashita, shakuhachi by Takeyasu Sakai, and tsuzumi/shimedaiko by Roetsu Fujishya. This is a masterpiece of contemporary Japanese music that has given new life to classical Japanese music.
