This 1971 album features flutist Prapancham Sita Ram, who studied under masters including Shri T.R. Mahalingam and performed extensively across Asia and Europe, alongside Guruvayur Ponnammal Dorai, a mridangam player who trained under Palghat Subbraiyer and Palavi Subramanya and collaborated with many of South India’s great musicians. The album showcases Carnatic classical music, which flourished in Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil regions south of the Vindhya Mountains in India’s southernmost part. Against the steady drone of the tanpura, the flute weaves fluid, intricate melodies, while the mridangam’s lively, bouncing rhythms create a rich and dynamic interplay—a profoundly expressive and beautifully expansive ensemble performance.
