An album by Shivkumar Sharma, a leading figure known for adapting the santoor to Indian classical music, released by the French label Ocora, specializing in ethnomusicology and field recordings. The santoor, believed to have originated in Kashmir, is a hammered dulcimer played by striking its 100 strings, stretched over a trapezoidal soundboard, with curved sticks. It is said to be the ancestor of the piano. The delicate and beautiful tones of the santoor, reminiscent of a harp or zither, resonate with a divine quality. Accompanied by Kasinath Misra on the tabla, the shimmering sound of the santoor, like sunlight reflecting on water, is truly captivating. Those who enjoy the works of Stephan Micus released by ECM or JAPO should definitely give this a listen.
