Steve Kuhn is an American pianist who, after graduating from Harvard University, developed an affinity for innovative jazz during his time at the Lenox School of Music, where he interacted with figures like Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry. He later gained recognition in groups led by Kenny Dorham and John Coltrane. This album is from his 1975 release on ECM Records. Recorded in a New York studio in 1974 with a quartet featuring Steve Swallow on electric bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Sue Evans on percussion, the album showcases Kuhn's versatile approach. He not only utilizes acoustic piano but also incorporates electric piano extensively, crafting a trance-like cross-over fusion that could be seen as a response to Chick Corea's acclaimed work "Return to Forever." The seamless interplay between Kuhn's soaring, graceful playing and the mellowness of the electric piano's tones is exceptional. This album is highly recommended for its enchanting fusion of styles.
