Released in 1975, this album is by American pianist Steve Kuhn. After graduating from Harvard University, Kuhn attended the Lenox School of Jazz, where he interacted with Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and others and absorbed the innovations of the emerging new jazz. He later came to prominence through his work with Kenny Dorham and John Coltrane.
Recorded at a New York studio in 1974, the album features a quartet with Steve Swallow on electric bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Sue Evans on percussion. Kuhn makes extensive use of electric piano as well as acoustic piano, developing a masterpiece that ranges from ecstatic contemporary jazz—almost as though offering his own response to Chick Corea’s Return to Forever—to crossover fusion. Kuhn’s fluid, soaring playing is perfectly matched by the mellow tone of the electric piano. Highly recommended.
