Released in 1981 as part of Victor’s “Digital Chozetsu no Sound” series—recordings of traditional Japanese instruments such as shakuhachi, flute, and koto captured and mastered using the most advanced technology of the time—this album features the 30-string koto. It presents compositions and performances by Noboru Miyashita, a 30-string koto player and contemporary composer known for transcending the boundaries of classical koto music. Side A, “Sound of the Galaxy – Tenkai,” is a collaboration between Miyashita’s 30-string koto and an array of Eastern and Western percussion instruments performed by Yas-Kaz (Yasukazu Satō), including bronze bells and sahari gongs. The result is a stunning contemporary piece reminiscent of the works of Toru Takemitsu and Tsutomu Yamashita. Side B, “Etenraku Imayo Variations,” features a solo performance on the 30-string koto—an entirely new musical creation that goes far beyond the traditional concept of classical music. A highly recommended album that showcases the brilliance of contemporary Japanese music.
