This is a locally recorded work by a steel drum band from Trinidad, an island country in the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, released in 1975 from the Explorer series of Nonesuch, a prestigious American label that has released many locally recorded works of ethnic music from around the world. The Westland Steel Band is a Carnival music group from Trinidad and Tobago, a Caribbean island nation in the Lesser Antilles. The ensemble consists of steel drums of various sizes that can play in different registers: ping pong (soprano), guitar pan (alto), cello pan (tenor), boom (bass), etc. The performance in this album seems to be a standard Carnival tune, but the sound is quite indigenous with some improvisation. The African colors of limbo and highlife can be felt strongly in this album.
