Thomas Demenga
Suite Nr. 3 in C-Dur / Esprit rude, Esprit doux
ECM NEW SERIES (Germany) 1990
ECM 1391 (LP) w/insert.
sleeve : M(IN SHRINKI)
media : M/M

Released in 1990 on ECM New Series, this album showcases Swiss cellist Thomas Demenga, whose work spans contemporary composition and improvisation as well as fresh, probing interpretations of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic repertoire. Formerly an artist-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival, Demenga is known for performing works by Heinz Holliger, Isang Yun, and Toshio Hosokawa, bringing a rare breadth of perspective to his playing.
The program features Johann Sebastian Bach’s Suite for Solo Cello No. 3 in C major alongside Elliott Carter’s Three Pieces for Flute and Clarinet. Bach’s unaccompanied cello is particularly striking here: Demenga’s supple lines seem to float within ECM’s signature, richly reverberant soundstage, creating a deep and immersive resonance. For condition verification, we have opened the shrink wrap on this dead stock, previously unplayed copy.
