This album was released as the 18th installment in the Musiques de l’Asie Traditionnelle series by Playa Sound, a French label founded in 1974 that specializes in world ethnomusicology. It features bhajans, devotional songs that emerged from the Bhakti movement—a mystical doctrine that arose after the 15th-century Islamic Mongol invasion of India. Accompanied by the veena, a string instrument widely used in South Indian classical music, and the tanpura, the most commonly played drone instrument in both North and South Indian classical traditions, this recording captures the essence of the bhajan, expressing deep faith and divine love through song.
