A historical masterpiece on record of music provided by Toru Takemitsu, Yuji Takahashi and Iannis Xenakis for the Steel Pavilion at the 1970 Osaka World Expo, the biggest festival in Japan's history. Conducted by Seiji Ozawa and Hiroshi Wakasugi and performed by the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. A1 'Crossing' is by Toru Takemitsu for two orchestras, solo instruments and female chorus. A2 'Egen' is by Yuji Takahashi, four three-way stereo music layers with sound sculptures and woodwind sounds by Francois Baschet. B1 'Hibiki Hana Ma' is by Iannis Xenakis, an electronic sound work for 12 channels and 800 loudspeakers. All of them are milestone works in the history of contemporary/avant-garde music. I have visited the Steel Pavilion, whose structure and space are still preserved at the site of the Expo, and I was very interested in how it actually sounded in the multidimensional acoustic space where speakers were installed in various locations to realise the temporal texture of the sound image.
