This album features ritual music of Tahiti and Bora Bora in the Pacific Islands of Polynesia, with music recorded in Tahiti on the A-side and Bora Bora on the B-side. The rhythms of violently striking traditional percussion instruments such as toele, pahu, and fa'ate are balanced by the melodies and chants of stringed instruments such as the guitar, which was introduced from the West, and the ukulele, which evolved in the Polynesian region. The music of Tahiti is very different from that of Melanesia and Micronesia. Especially, the music of Tahiti is characterized by percussion instruments, while the music of Bora Bora is characterized by chants and strings.
