Released in 1971 as part of *The Living Tradition*, the ethnic music/field recording series on Argo, a label under the UK’s Decca, this album focuses on Indian classical music. Recorded in the field by Deben Bhattacharya, Side A features a performance of “Raga Bhuparanjani” by sarod player Damodarlal Kabra — said to have been one of the earliest disciples of Ali Akbar Khan — together with sitar player Manju Bhatt. B1 contains “Raga Shuddha Sāranga,” performed by students of Triveni Kala Sangha in Delhi, while B2 features another performance of “Raga Bhuparanjani,” recorded in Varanasi by sitar player Debendra Krishna Chattopadhaya and tabla player Surendra Mohan Mishra. Side A is especially valuable, offering a rare opportunity to hear Damodarlal Kabra, whose recordings are said to be few in number, making this album an important historical document as well.
