killer leader album released in 1970 by Czech master jazz bassist Miroslav Vitous, just before he went on to co-found Weather Report. This is a heavyweight quintet session featuring an absolutely unreal lineup: Joe Henderson (tenor sax), John McLaughlin (guitar), Herbie Hancock (piano), and Jack DeJohnette (drums). The hyper-aggressive rhythm section of Vitous and DeJohnette drives things hard, while McLaughlin’s psychedelic guitar and Hancock’s dark, gritty piano take the Eddie Harris classic on A1 to a whole different level—seriously dangerous stuff. Throughout the album, you can hear that new wave energy emerging in the wake of electric-era Miles: forward-thinking, intense, and loaded with momentum. This copy is the U.S. pressing issued in 1972, retitled from the original “Infinite Search” to “Mountain in the Clouds”.
