An extraordinary 1969 recording by American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, who rose to prominence after joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1959 and later became a key figure alongside Miles Davis, while also displaying his full creative power in progressive fusion groups such as Weather Report. The album features an all-star lineup: Chick Corea, Airto Moreira, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Miroslav Vitous, and Sonny Sharrock. Drawing on the electric, funk- and Africa-influenced concepts he absorbed while playing in Miles Davis’s evolving band, Shorter filters those ideas through his own imagination to create a landmark work that opened a new path for crossover jazz. Essential listening for fans of Brazilian musicians like Egberto Gismonti and Milton Nascimento as well. Original U.S. pressing.
