This album, released in 1979 by Friedrich Gulda—a renowned jazz pianist and composer from Vienna, Austria—is another standout in his career, which began in the early 1950s. Known for his work in both standard and modern jazz, Gulda also left behind landmark cosmic jazz masterpieces like Fata Morgana (1971) and Nachricht Vom Lande (1977), which are both spacey and chaotic. In this album, he explores his own original compositions alongside J.S. Bach’s Fugueand Italian Concerto. Side A features pieces performed entirely on the clavichord, while side B is performed on the piano. The piano performance is, of course, remarkable, but the potential of his compositions on the clavichord is truly extraordinary—reminiscent of an electric guitar with effects, delivering an ecstatic performance. Genre boundaries completely dissolve in this work.
