A 1979 recording by Atrium Musicae de Madrid, the early music ensemble founded in 1964 by Gregorio Paniagua, the Madrid-born performer and one of the foremost authorities in the field of early music research. The group featured members including his son Luis Paniagua, later known as one of the key figures in the Spanish contemporary/new age scene for translating Arab and Mediterranean classical music into a modern framework, as well as his brother Eduardo. While Gregorio left behind a remarkable body of work centered on the revival of ancient and classical music, this album focuses on 15th- and 16th-century Renaissance music, presenting villancicos, traditional Spanish early music forms, in his own distinctive arrangements. On tracks such as A3, one can even hear melodic passages reminiscent of Steve Reich’s masterpiece Tehillim, itself inspired by Jewish sacred texts. Japanese promo pressing on Super Vinyl, manufactured with high-grade vinyl compound.
